Overview
VesselTrack is a real-time maritime intelligence platform built around AIS (Automatic Identification System) data — the transponder signals commercial vessels broadcast as they move. It lets users examine live vessel positions, movements and histories, and exposes that data through an API.
Why it matters
Beyond standalone tracking, VesselTrack is the vessel-information backbone behind FuelClock.nz: the en-route fuel cargoes FuelClock verifies are sourced from VesselTrack's ingestion and processing of AIS feeds. Owning our own data layer means we control freshness, coverage and reliability rather than depending on a third-party black box.
The engineering
The hard part is volume and velocity — continuously ingesting high-frequency position reports, normalising them, and serving them in real time without falling behind. It is built as a streaming data pipeline with a clean API on top.
Status
VesselTrack is actively under development; the public site and API are being expanded as coverage grows.
